The University engages in a program of voluntary compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina and with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and codes. To be effective, this program must be proactive and must embody the proper attitudes toward injury and illness prevention on the part of all members of the University community.
Incident prevention can be classified as a broad term that involves understanding your responsibilities, compliance with safety work practices, communicating safety issues, safety training, Identifying workplace hazards, procedures for corrective action and recordkeeping. All these efforts combine to prevent injuries and illnesses to members of the University community. Reporting and Investigating Incidents
Reporting an incident, no matter how minor, is vital to eliminating unsafe conditions and preventing reoccurrence. Each employee has the responsibility to report work-related injuries and illnesses immediately to their supervisor. The Environmental Health and Safety office (EHS) has designed incident and investigation reporting forms to facilitate the written communication and follow-up required after each incident occurs. Workers’ Compensation provides benefits to employees who sustain work-related injuries and/or contract occupational diseases while carrying out the duties and responsibilities of their employment. A Third Party Administrator (TPA), contracted by the state of North Carolina, accepts or denies liability for a workplace injury or illness. The Workers’ Compensation Administrator (WCA) in the EHS office works to ensure all claims for Workers’ Compensation are processed in a timely and equitable manner.
